I just renewed my subscription and upgraded to a promotion for 40 gigs at 5G speed...but in the phone Taskbar it is showing 4G. Why?

Some phones have a 5G auto setting and only use 5G when the extra speed is necessary/beneficial.  My phone switches between LTE and 5G.  Have you checked your options, e.g. settings -> cellular -> cellular data options -> voice and data if an iPhone?

@JCNFLD  Is your phone 5G compatible .are you in a 5G coverage area ? Have you selected your network to 5G ? Also note that even on 4G/LTE you will still get 5G data speeds . With a 5G plan 

Adding what phone do you have ? You need to check your phone settings to change the network selection
