Data intermittant

Jarod1

PM customer for about 6 years, flawless service and very happy with it until now.

Last week my phone's data stopped working. Text and phone worked, and I had bars, but no "4G" or "LTE" indicator where it usually is. Internet worked on wifi.

The phone was 3 years old and the memory was full, so I ordered a new phone and moved physical SIM to the new one. Data came up and worked fine for several days, until tonight. Now exactly the same conditions: Text and phone worked, bars present, but no "4G, etc..." indicator.

An hour later it is back (4G indicator is present). What can cause this intermittent data interruption? I haven't touched the APN settings.

I've been with PM since the beta launch and I actually seen this as well for the first time this past week. All of 3G/4G/LTE would show connected good signal but no data there was a little x. Restarted phone multiple times same issue and then it just fixed itself... outages only lasted a couple of minutes... voice still worked.

Good, it will switch back and forth between the strongest signal.

When 3G is decommissioned in 2025.

@BKNS27

from what I heard, it won't be end of 2025, it will be later

Good, it will switch back and forth between the strongest signal.

When 3G is decommissioned in 2025. You will only have 4G/LTE unless you are on 5G plan with a 5G phone then it will switch between 4G/LTE and 5G.

Yes, if this persists I would try a different SIM card next. Thanks everyone for the suggestions, Bravos all around!

I would be very surprised if your current sim was the culprit. They rarely ...if ever...fail.

It is set to auto-connect LTE/3G/4G

Yeah, I thought about that too, but the problem was in different areas of the city. Could still be a carrier issue that is broader than just one tower.

@Jarod1   Two or three times in the past couple of weeks my data has stopped working temporarily but the phone still said LTE or 5G depending where I was.  I tried airplane mode on then off, rebooting the phone.  Neither worked.  It was not off for long, maybe fifteen minutes or so, but this is different from yours where you lose the network indicator as well.  I would try either or both of contacting customer service (open a ticket at the chat icon bottom right of this page) or go to a Telus/Koodo store that carries PM sims and try a new one (or order from Amazon, or order from PM which will likely take the longest).

@Jarod1

Is the Cellular Data Option for Voice & Data set on LTE? If there is a weak 4G/LTE signal, it will set to 3G.

@Jarod1

could also be a local network issue. Maybe Telus is working on tower or tower could even be failing. If possible, see if you experience similar problem while visiting different parts of town. Go for a drive a few miles away and see if it still happens.

I thought the phone might be failed as well, so bought a new one. It seems to be intermittent (worked for several days, then dead for an hour or so, now appears to be back). I will watch it and see if it happens again. Could the SIM be faulty? The contacts looked clean.

@Jarod1 , could the phone be faulty?  The APN settings don't change or improve data performance.  It is either correct or incorrect.  The fact that data does work, APN settings are fine.
