Data Add-On Runs Out Immediately

I have a plan with 5G and every once in a while i go over and sometimes I buy the 1G add on. The problem is, the add on seems to run completely through within one afternoon after purchasing? That doesn't make sense as 5G usually lasts me a full month. I still have wifi at home so it's not like apps are all updating or something. I probably wont buy the add on ever again as this happens literally every time. I just wonder if there's some sort of explanation. Thanks

@pamullins13 - does your device have a data limiter set on it?

Check the settings of the device to see if there is a certain limit set that once the phone reaches a certain limit, the data function turns off automatically, then either increase it or turn that setting completely off.

@pamullins13

That is really strange that it would eat up 1gb in an afternoon when you are on your home wifi.

Suggestion is to login to your account and look under View My Usage and see what is eat up your 1gb data add-on.

Maybe there maybe an issue with your modem and it switches to data without you knowing.

It happened to me when I was testing my internet speed and it automatically switch to my data and are up 4gb of data in less than an hour.

@pamullins13 did you just used up the data?

First check My Account Overview page and see if there is any line about data in the section My data & Addons.  If there is no such line, then the data are used

Then check the Usage log https://selfserve.publicmobile.ca/Overview/viewUsageChangePlan/ and see if that confirm the huge data usage (but maybe you need to wait 12 hours as that page usually update in batch twice a day or so)

If PM clearly shows such a abnormal usage, now, you need to check your phone.

Any chance you have Wifi-Assist or Adaptive Wifi enabled?  Those are option that enable Mobile Data if you have a weak wifi signal

Also,  if you are on Android, it is easy to track back the usage from Mobile Usage page by adjusting the "Start billing cycle on" date to match the PM cycle start date (a reminder, PM running on a 30 days cycle and the cycle start date will change).  The Mobile Data usage page will confirm if you did use the data and which app used that

But if you are on iPhone, you cannot really track barkward.  You have to reset the Mobile data counter and start tracking from that day on.  it is best for you to reset the count and track on your next PM cycle.  As long as the counter is reset, you will get similar info as Android's but you need to reset the counter manually at the beginning of the PM cycle if you want to keep tracking

Check each app for their data consumption. Perhaps one of them has gone rogue and has sucked down your data. Or OS and app updates are set to allow updating over mobile data.
