Coverage in Ontario, Greater Toronto Area.

I have been having issues with connectivity when going as far as Collingwood (Blue Mountains), and Halton Hills (Toronto Premium Outlets). I am not able to send/receive texts or make calls. There have been several instances where I have attempted to make calls to someone within the GTA (while in the GTA myself) and it was stating that they were long distance. Can someone please clarify this issue for me? This is not a reliable provider if I am losing connection in such common areas.

I also receive the long distance notice and I have Canada wide calling. I've experienced that with most providers, even if I had coverage. But it doesn't always happen.

The long distance issue is not a Public Mobile quirk, it’s just how the calling system is setup.

There are really only two types of calls.  One being local, which used to mean dialing only 7 digits (many years ago) and sometimes (almost always now) a ten digit number.

The other type of call, is long distance, which technically requires a 1 to be dialed first, however cellular networks will convert the call when required (misdial3).

Public Mobile does not have local calling area plans, so they, and long distance calls within a province will not be chargeable on a provincewide plan.  A trick to make the “long distance charges may apply” message go away, is to make all your phone numbers be dialed with +1XxxYyyZzzz format.

I If you are on Canada wide plan, the +1 format is also handy to use.

I can test another phone, but I doubt that's the issue. Signals are perfect within the city, but going further out is where problems start to arise. With regards to calling other numbers, they have local area codes as well. There is no reason to be receiving long distance notices.

Ignore long distance notices unless the calls do not connect; if they annoy you add 1 to each number. It's a quirk in PM's system but there will never be any extra charge in spite of the message.

Sometimes, it will give you the long distance message. When that happens, try dialing a 1 before the 10-digit phone number and it should solve the problem. If it does not solve the problem, you will need to message the mods to have them take a look.

@Swavy, I can't comment on coverage in the specific areas you mentioned.  I can say that GTA coverage in general is very good.  With respect to issues where calls are not going through due to long distance issues, that's an account provisioning problem that you can ask the moderator team to fix.  What model of phone are you using?   Some phones may not have all the supported bands which can handicap coverage.

Do you have province-wide or canada-wide talk plan? I recommend you send a private message to the moderator team and ask them to investigate long distance call issue for you.  include your account# or phone#, as well as your account PIN (if know) to help speed up the identification process.

How long until a moderator replies?:

  • Office Hours: Mon-Friday 9am to 9pm, and Saturday & Sunday from 9am to 7:30pm [Toronto Time].
  • Messages are replied to during office hours, in the order in which they are received
  • Typical response time is between 1-3 hours, depending on message queue, but can be up to 48 hours.
  • There is no need to send multiple messages.

How can I view my private messages between myself and a Community Moderator?

That is strange. Hopefully people from that area will be able to comment on their coverage.

Usually when users are getting the long distance message calling numbers with an area code in their province it is because they are close to the boarder and have unknowingly connected to a tower in another province. This doesn't seem to be the reason for you if you are in the GTA.

I'll doing some more reading and try to get back to you tonight

Do you have another phone you can use the sim in to see if you experience the same issues? This will tell you if it is the phone or sim.

Do the people you are calling have an area code from that area?

This phone was never having issues before transferring to PM. Also, how come it sometimes tells me calls I'm making are long distance?

Public Mobile uses the Telus network so if you are having issues in major areas I'm wondering if it is your phone.

As for calling others do they have the area code for there or are they just in gta?
