The online chatter confirmed that I should stop the payment to cancel my account but wouldnt this cause outstanding bills?

No.
Either port your number out.
Or remove auto pay.
And remove your credit card or atm card.

Great point, if you turn off autopay thst should enough, but some have reported their card continued to get charged in error even if autopay so removing it will avoid that

@Roch2021 Hello if you are on auto pay remove your credit card to be sure your account goes into suspension

@Roch2021 If you don't want to keep your number for porting out, then yes stopping the payment will deactivate the account/number after 90 days of suspension.

@Roch2021 No, PM is a prepaid provider. You pay before you use for the next 30 days. So, if you stop paying, the account will go into suspension. You have 90 days to change your mind , just pay and reactivate
If suspended for 90 days and no payment, the account will be closed permanently and the number will be returned to the original provider, ie, you lost you number
