Can't Access 5G

Recently swapped my PM sim from an old Samsung phone to a Note 20 Ultra 5G. I have a 5G plan however my phone never shows connected to 5G. Old bell sim would show/connect to 5G. Network mode shows 5G/LTE auto connect. Wondering if it has to do with the fact that my other phone wasn't 5G compatible? Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Hi @softech @May231

Thank you for your reassuring replies. As long as my phone can connect successfully for Data and Phone services, I'll be satisfied. I have no intention of buying a new phone.

Happy holidays.

Some phones have settings that you need to change to get the 5G. Just google the phone name and "how to switch to 5G" it will show you. I had the same problem but now i get that 5G

hi @hyT if it connects and works on 4G LTE network now on 4G plan, it will work for sure with 5G plan. The 5G plan is more "5G speed plan", it guve you the better speed but you still can access 3g and LTE network

Your phone M31 is not 5G compatible. But again, you can use the new plan to access 4G network. On the 4G plan, your phone's top speed would be 100Mbps , but with a 5G plan, you phone can download as fast as 250Mbps on the 4G network

Hi @softech , or anyone who knows.

I have scheduled to switch plan (Black Friday deal of $34 for 40GB 30days 5G) from 4G to 5G on Dec 22. I have been using a Samsung M31 bought online without problems with 4G. The phone was made for India but sent to me from Hong Kong, a very good phone at a discounted price.

I am not concerned with achieving full 5G speed of 250. I change because the new plan is cheaper and has more GB of data. I'll be happy if it'll work with the new plan even at 4G speed of 100 or a little faster. How do I find out if my Samsung M31 will actually connect? Where can I check.  Please advise. Thank you.

Actually, Note 20 is same as S20 series which have issue accessing 5G on Telus networks.  Something to do with Samsung OS, look like Telus (and Koodo and PM) "can’t do anything until Samsung decides to submit a patch to resolve this issue."

"Basically Samsung blocks 5G capability on phones that have Canadian CSC. This was originally agreed / requested by Telus. The problem now is that Telus wants to have 5G on all phones, but Samsung will not go back to all the older models to enable it."

For S20, some people tried to flash OS from other provider and it opened up the 5G network on Telus.  But that was for S20.  If you are confident, you can do similar thing with your Note 20 as well

It's not actually the network that is the issue. Telus Mobility customers can use 5G on this device just fine.  I haven't tested a Koodo Mobile SIM card, but you're right that a Public Mobile SIM card in the phone mesns that the Samsung software prevents customers from using the 5G network.
