Android APN NOT CORRECT

Clachankid

Hello,

If you have a newer Android phone 8.0+ the APN for public mobile is not correct and you cannot edit it? Why has public mobile not set the correct APN by default I have paid for data and there is no possiblility to get it to work.

Well if I place different SIM's into the phone some allow me to add a new APN and others do not. This is clearly a function of the SIM. Example I have a T-Mobile SIM it allows me to add APN I place the public mobile SIM there is know option to add APN. So there must be way to setup the SIM to allow a new APN?

If you are willing to do this, one way would be to unlock your bootloader, root your phone, and install a custom ROM.  I know that option is not for everyone, but it is one possibility.

Sorry, but this is not correct.  APN information is saved on the phone, and are not contained within the sim card.  It's not Public Mobile's responsiibility to load it into the phone, nor can they even do it.

It may be possible to do a push with settings through a text message, and some carriers have used that method before, but I would imagine that method would still require the phone to allow those changes to be made.

But even with the APN settings not being on your phone, it should still be possible to make changes or at least add a new APN setting to make data work.  Once again, the fact that ability is disabled is on the phone manufactuer.

This is 100% on the phone manufacturer and the software that they have installed.  I know you don't want to hear this, but there isn't anything Public Mobile can do about this.  They don't control the sofware that is installed on phones.

Hi, Sorry to hear of your predicament. I have once been in exactly the same situation as you and tore my hair out. I was fortunate to find a remedy, though one has to be a bit of geek to get this to work. I’m not sure what phone you have but give it a serious thought and it may just well work for you.

In brief, this is how it worked for me. I had to roll back to Android 7, which allowed me to add an APN. Once everything was working fine, I upgraded back to Android 8.

More details about my experience above. I then had a Google Nexus 5X (aka LG H790) and fortunately Google makes images available for all OS versions — like Android 6, 7 and 8. Following instructions on the YouTube to revert back to Android 7,  I was able to add a new APN — all in under 40 minutes. Once everything was working fine, I reverted back to Android 8 two days later.

Let me know if I can be any additional help.

PS. Currently I own a Samsung A5 (2017) running Android 8 and on this phone my experience was totally different and pleasant. When I inserted the PM SIM, it picked up the correct PM APN immediately. The problem thence is not with Android 8 or 8.1 but with the phone manufacturer’s software.

Changing or adding a new APN is still possible with most phones that are running Android 8.0.

The inability to add a new APN or modifying an existing one is a known Android 8.1 problem.

Other people have had success putting a Freedom SIM in, which seemed to have allowed them to add a new APN, fill in Public Mobile settings, reboot. Put Public Mobile SIM in.

(I think... For me playing with an active SpeakOut SIM eventually populated the Public Mobile APN settings, but I didn't write down the exact steps, sorry.) YMMV.

Part of the issue is how some phones do not allow any APN changes, and some that do not allow you to add a new APN either.

This isn't up to Public Mobile. The maufactuers of the phones choose the software to be installed on the device.  The APN settings are saved within the software.  Public Mobile has no control of it.
