That's correct. There is no delay in changing speeds. When a plan change is done, the system now forces the device to momentarily disconnect from the network.    In some cases, the customer will need to restart the device to get mobile data to work again.  The plan change appears to do some type of immediate network provisioning update.

As noted earlier, alway check before to see if your phone is 5G compatible.

You can easily switch when you decide to get a 5G phone by just popping out the SIM and putting it in your new phone.

Correct.  Saying that, you should still get higher data speeds with your 5G PM plan over the 4G plans.

5G plans are capped at 250 Mbps

4G plans are capped at 100 Mbps

@Whitehair   I just did a speed test on my iPhone 13 which is on 4G/LTE at the moment and the download speed was 145Mbps.  While the iPhone 11 isn't a 5G phone you should still be able to get good speeds on LTE and potentially faster than the normal 4G cap of 100Mbps.  What speed are you getting?

@Whitehair

It looks like the iPhone 11 is not 5G compatible.  Need iPhone 12 and above.

Try a speed test though.  LTE only phones can still get higher speeds on the PM 5G plan over 4G plans.

Sometimes it also can take a few days for data speeds to be adjusted when PM customers change plans.

Might want to check the nearest cell phone tower to  your location:

Sometimes customers are not near a 5G tower.

Have you tried a data speed test yet?
