5 G Data problems?

Hi There,

Anyone else in New Brunswick having Data problems on 5G?

Phone and text no problem but I am currently getting speeds equal to what I used to get on my old Bell landline (1 mgs and usually far less). Ookla Speedtest won't even run this morning and just kept coughing up network error messages.  Downloads keep hanging up.  As for streaming the only was i can watch anything online is to download it first. Can't say when the problem started as I went over my 300 GB data last session (new session started on the 13th) so the last three weeks have been ridiculous to say the least. (Trying to set up a new computer here and, I kid you not, installing Firefox took well over 4 hours. I clocked it downloading at 5 and 10 BYTES second! I know all providers throttle you when you go over data limits but...)

Unfortunately, no choice of local Internet provider other than Bell landline (and perhaps Darth Vader's Starcom - but no way I am supporting him...) can provide service which is why I went with Public. When it works, I have 5-6 MGPS which I consider not too shabby however to get that I  installed a 20-foot antenna to pick up the Bell tower 4.5 kms distant. Of course that means I have to work around Bell's constant throttling of Telus service as they cut it to absolute molasses at peak times of the day and the year. Summer is utterly horrible as soo as school is out.  Despite the vaunted coverage maps, too, I have never once had a 5G signal. Only LTE.

If I wasn't afraid of burning my bridges, I'd try Rogers as they have the only other tower nearby but I have no assurance they would be any better.

David.

Thanks. Sorry for not replying sooner but had some outside work to do.  Oh, I know very well that Bell shares towers with Telus.  No Telus towers left in NB now and I suspect the marriage is not quite equitable...

Yes, I  had high speed before I went over the limit - if high speed counts as 5mbs download ( I honestly don't know what parameters I should expect).  I'm 71 and a slow typer and I've been learning as I go here. Been with Public for a year now not a new customer. Signal strength in the past 24 hours has been good to excellent with a high of -75 at one time.  Shift from Bell was from Landline to Public Mobile cell so speed comparison moot only as example. Cell speed originally was 5 time the wired landline.

Phone has been reset three times since yesterday and no new software updates since Feb 13. Download speed has been variable all day with from 0 to a high of 2.6 mbs. It doesn't seem to matter which computer I connect it to (I have three here. Been using two via USB tether for the past year on Public Mobile shifting tether between them as needed with no problems. Today downloading a 700 mb imaging program  required 3 plus hours and numerous restarts. This is the worst yet in the year I've had Public. Have not changed any settings in the computers or the phone in the past year.  In past 24 hours I've also been getting numerous "no signal" warnings from the phone which I normally do receive at home. Like you suggest I will probably have to see if an agent can reset their end. Thanks,

Cheers

Thanks. Phone is indeed set to LTE, I just checked. Signal strength is good to  excellent. Had -75 yesterday at one time. It seems to be only a data problem.

Did you have high speed with PM in previous month and low speed in current month? If so, that should mean you should have a good signal in your area but there's something currently wrong with your connection. First, try resetting your network connection (circle with wrench icon in your settings) or rebooting your phone. If that does not work, message the customer service agent and ask them to reset the network on their end and see if it improves.

On the other hand, if you are new client and are finding that your speeds are no better than when you were a bell client, it may be that you are in a poor signal area. You should understand that PM (Telus) shares towers with Bell. Switching from Bell to PM will probably not improve your speed in that situation. You can load a Tower Locator app onto your phone and see what towers/companies are in your location. Also, you can contact customer service to verify.

And, the advice below is correct. 5G may be faster, but the range is much less. 4G has better range. So, depending on your location from the tower, you may find that 4G is faster for you than 5G. I have received advice from Telus support in the past to select 4G/LTE as the preferred network instead of 5G in my phone settings to stop my phone from searching for 5G and having a more stable and stronger signal.

Good luck.

You will find that 4G/LTE speed maybe faster than 5G depending whether you are located inside or outside and the tower locations.
