Buy a phone from trusted sources, like Costco/Mobile Klink.Apple Store/Samsung.ca, and make sure you buy a phone that is designed and sold for Canada, not imported phones that are designed for other countries.   Make sure the phone is VoLTE compatible with Public Mobile.  If you are buying in person, try to use the IMEI checker on this page to confirm first before you buy:

Hare are couple choices of phones that will work:

  • iPhone 8 or later
  • Google Pixel 4 or later
  • Samsung S22 or later
  • Samsung Flip 2/Fold 2 or later
  • Samsung A15/A35/A55 or later

For the sim card, it is easy.  if the new phone allows physical sim, just move the sim card from the old phone and insert into the new phone
