2G/3G/4G ?

What is the difference between 2G, 3G, 4G?

AT&T and T-Mobile have and are shutting down their 3G systems. That shuts us out for talk. As I mentioned, 2G is said to work on T-Mobile for us for talk.

Data and text should still work fine on either 4G.

But it's all rather flaky now. They almost shouldn't be selling them.

Hi @dyardeni

the are the different mobile generation

2G: no longer used in PM.  But could be used in US roaming for voice on T-Mobile

3G:  PM uses it for voice.  Data can be used here and can be as fast as 12 Mbps.  Text can be delivered on 3G too

4G/LTE:  Pm uses it for data and text.  Regular PM plan restricted to be at 3Mbps only.  New 4G plan could be as fast as 150Mbps

2G is the old GSM. Rogers still has some of that running. Nobody else in Canada uses it. We can apparently use it with talk on T-Mobile when roaming in the states.

3G is what Public uses for talk. Also known as UMTS or WCDMA. It can also do text and data. The data is also known as HSPA.

4G is what Public uses for data (when not on HSPA). Also called LTE. It can also do text. No talk as of this time. That is known as VoLTE. Not here yet.

How does it get affected when you are roaming?

@dyardeni

PM not have 2G,

Plans with 3G speed may reach download speeds of up to 3 Mbps, and plans with 4G speed may reach download speeds up to 100 Mbps, with the coverage and reliability of the LTE network. Speed and signal strength may vary with your device, configuration, Internet traffic, environmental conditions, applicable network management and other factors.
