Yes, that was it, under "Call settings" not just plain "Settings", turn "caller ID and spam protection" OFF. Now people can see who called, 'cos I've got nothing to hide.

Many of the responders seem to have it backwards. It's the writer's phone number that is showing as private number on outgoing calls on other peoples phones.
