At least having service when traveling to other countries would be great. Even if there is no plan/it's pay as you go, I can see who called me and contact them in a different way. 

 

I have friends/family who want to sign up, but because of this, they are unwilling to switch to PM.

I usually get a local sim card when i travel it is much cheaper than roaming.

consensus it get a fongo number (voip number and its free) and forward calls to that number.  when you have wifi or data you will see who called.

 

Text messaging is another issue...  there are text forwarding apps (but phone has to have signal)  so you would have to plug sim card into an old phone and leave it at home and set the forwarding sms to email.
