This idea has been posted before (even by myself once) but really needs another look

It seems silly that a call originating in Ottawa & terminates in Gatineau is a LOCAL call, yet those on provincial calling plans are unable to do so

A provincial long distance plan SHOULD cover a LOCAL call, regardless of what area code is

Whether Public makes an exception for those living there or lets anyone in ON dial it (after all with a Province wide long distance plan we can then call Gatineau from ANYWHERE in ON)

This issue needs to be resolved; many people make this daily commute and it sounds really weird repeatedly explaining that on a Province wide plan they can dial a city hundreds of kilometres away but can not place a LOCAL call

Just to clarify, Ott and Gat have 2 area codes each one.  So if fixed it should include the new area codes too:

  • Ottawa area codes are: 613, 343

  • Gatineau area codes are: 819, 873

Thank you,

Jairo.

I also forgot to mention that I find it funny when you sign up for Public Mobile and they ask you where you want your phone number, Ottawa is actually listed as "OttawaHull". So even in their own activation system it is seen as one.

Hi

I live in Cumberland, Ontario, and can see Quebec from my front window (well almost). This should be a easy problem to solve. Create a NCR.

For me this would be useful, since, like many, I have a cottage in Quebec. Funny, I can phone Kenora, which is in the Central Time Zone, but I can't phone 300 meters across the Ottawa River!

I remember, some years ago, Canadians living in the Thousand Islands area were given a special deal from the Telcos, since they were always connecting to the US towers, and getting charged high US roaming rates. So, it can and has been done.

@RogerI actually, it's not that funny.  Quebec is not Ontario, and if your plan only includes Province-wide calling, you can't call it without using add-on minutes.  Kenora is Ontario, despite being in a different time zone so you can call there all you want.

@srlawren & @RogerI

The Kenora Thistles won the Stanley Cup way back in 1907

With a population of 4,000 they are by far the smallest city to ever hoist the cup

Random trivia I know ha ha

@RogerI I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm questioning whether it should be done.  Province-wide calling is province-wide, whereas Quebec, even if within eyesight, is in another province.  Therefore by very definition of the talk option, it is not--and, I'm sorry, IMHO, should not--be included.

@srlawren you know what else isn't funny...when you're physically in Ontario but the strongest tower is in Quebec. Or vice versa. That, to me, seems like a problem that needs to be solved.

I, along with many other people it seems, would be willing to pay a nominal fee to have the true local calling area as an add-on. I completely agree that province wide should mean province wide, but when I can't even call within the province I'm physically in it seems that perhaps province wide does not mean province wide.
