Two people that I called for the first time today ( I am not in their contact lists) told me that my caller ID name is completely different to my actual name. The name that apparently appears as my caller ID is actually one of my friends (one of my contacts) - weird! I've had this number for 20 years and I'm very confused why this has happened - how do I correct this?

@Janeba Maybe your friend has a wrong contact on his/her phone address book. If that is not the case, it will be a problem with those Caller ID lookup service.
We don't know how those name lookup services track and update the contact database. But as I said, you can start with Hiya and ask them to update their name database. They usually will complete it within a week. Updating Hiya would resolve any wrong names on Samsung devices. If there are other brands of phones with the wrong name lookup, let us know and we can try to find out the caller id service linked to it. Also, ask your friend if they installed any name lookup service or spam prevention app, those would be like Hiya that keep track of their own name database

It seems strange that the wrong caller ID name is the same as one of my contacts - who has never owned this number. How did one of my contact names get attached to my number?

PM does not pass the name on Caller ID, only the phone number
The reason your friends seeing a name display because the phones using some Caller ID lookup services. You have to contact those caller id services and ask them to update to your name.
If your friend using Samsung, might it is from Hiya service ( https://www.hiya.com/products-smart-call ). there are different services like that. But start with Hiya, contact them and ask them to update their database:
