@abond2 if you had the phone for sometime and locked yourself out, and its asking for a puk code, then contact the moderators for it. There are 2 ways to contact the Moderator Team:
Once connected to Simon, you will be asked to log in again with your community user name and password. Please do, this allows you to continue and send your message.
- Check your private message sent box (click on the envelope top right of your screen) to make sure the message was sent.
- Keep an eye on the envelope top right of your screen. The mods answer will show up there. When it does, you will be asked to verify your self service account, with your password and login. Doing so allows the process to continue. Stay safe.

If you think it's locked to another carrier, put a Public sim in. Most phones will tell you it's locked when you turn on if you put a in different carrier's sim.
What model is the phone and where did you get it? You said it's an old Public phone. If it can take a sim card, it'll work and no need to unlock.

To reach moderators there are two ways.
1- do you have a public mobile account?? If yes follow instructions on picture below. If no, follow step 2.

It is a Samsung that I think was active with Public and my wife's plan is with Freedom

What is your question?
As for unlocking phones you would have to contact the provider you got the phone from for the unlock.
If it's a Samsung phone you can go to Samsung Canada website and open a live chat with them for the unlock code.
If it's Telus/ Koodo phone and phone is before the unlock law change they would still work on PM.

Moderators can only help to unlock a Telus phone. For phones locked somewhere else, contact the carrier locked to.
