A CSA can resolve this manually for him, sounds like it was a typo or one of the digits/letters were off. They can fix it.

Just have him contact a CS_Agent to make adjustments to his account and to your rewards.
They are very accommodating but it suggested that he be apologizing and that he forgot to enter it. He should also have your referral code handy and enter it when he is in touch with them.
