I currently have a telus mobile account with phone number. I just set up an account with Public. Can i simply buy an e-sim and it will use my current phone number? And what if i take out the current sim, as i would be switching over to public, my phone number will still work?

Here is a step by step instruction.
The steps must be followed in exact order if you are porting your number over to PM:

Hey @rustyrooster
What I would recommend is FULLY sign up for Public Mobile first. You can purchase a eSIM for $5 and then if you're currently using an eSIM with Telus, you just need to go into your settings and make the PM SIM card your primary. HOWEVER, I would 100% make sure your PM account is fully working. Make and take calls, Text and receive texts. Make sure data is working too. THEN and only then if everything is working, then you can log into your account and port over your Telus number.
Here's the link.

your current sim is Telus sim card, it cannot be used on Public Mobile network. To use Public Mobile, you need a PM sim card or esim
and yes, you can use esim for PM and request to transfer your phone number into PM from Telus. Make sure the Telus account is active, get the Telus account number. Then download PM app and subscribe. You will be asked about porting your phone number after the payment step. Just give them the phone number and Telus account number
