changing the network in the US

I've been to the US a few times this year and I wasn't too worried about using my phone, but it didn't work even though I have a Canada/US plan. I looked into it when I got back the most recent time and it says we need to go into the network settings and change which network I'm on. How do we know which Network in the US? Sorry I'm kinda clueless on this matter.  Also loving these new CAN/US/Mex plans! hopefully they are here to stay.

Most phones show the name of the network that is connected at the top of the screen.  As for device's network settings, allowing the phone to autoamtically choose the network should work, but if it doesn't, you can manually choose etiher the AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon network to see which work best.
