Will the Xiaomi Redmi 6 work on Public mobile in the BC / Vancouver area?

I'm an exchange student and I would like to buy the phone unlocked on Amazon and then slot a Public sim card in? Is that possible or does the phone's frequency bands not work with public mobile?

Oh okay, William are you saying that the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is better than the Redmi 6? Because on Amazon the 6 is actually cheaper than the 5 and the majority of online reviews comment on how it is an upgraded better model - e.g. the dual camera and LED?

I'm mostly bothered about camera and battery life, which the 6 generally wins on....? I've always had iPhones so research on other phones is all new to me.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 32GB ( $ 214.95 ) https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07FW8TDF9/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A1BN7MA8ELLJY5&psc=1

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 E7S ( $ 259.94)

Your frequency check link is to a TD-LTE edition which is designed for the Asian market.  We work in FDD-LTE here.  The Asian models also use different frequencies for 3G.  The only compatibility is on 2G which this service does not offer.  That said, the model you linked on Amazon is labled as global version.  Whenever I see B4 LTE, I think of North America compatibility as this band is only used here and I think a few South American countries.

If you feel uncomfortable with going by the details on the web page, post a question and see if other customers can weigh in and give you greater assurance.  Alternatively, if you are willing to pay a bit more you can go with the Redmi Note 5 AI model that is provided in the community forum link in my earlier post.  The extra cost is well worth it.  The Note 6 designation does not make it better than the Note 5 AI which was released only 4 months ago.  The Note 5 AI is a premium edition that uses the snapdragon 636 CPU instead of a mediatek CPU intended for the North American market.  Mediatek models are usually intended for local consumption as a ultra lost cost option.  If you look closely at the specs, the screen is not even full HD.  The cameras on the AI are way better and crucially it comes with a 4000 mAh battery that yields over 10 hours of SOT between charges.

^ this website is saying that neither 3G or 4G in Vancouver will work with the phone?

If so, it is compatible with Public Mobile.  You may not get a lot of 4G LTE coverage due to lacking band 4 LTE (same applies to all Canadian providers) but it fully supports the 3G bands needed for talk, text, and HSPA+ data as well as a couple of additional bands (5 and 7) of LTE that will be available in at least parts of Vancouver area.  You're good to go.

Gsmarena is a terrible site for checking Chines branded phones.  They usually don't post all the variants.  Of course phone makers like Xiaomi doesn't help the cause by making too many variants and not doing a good job with differentiating the various models.  They have recently IPOed and so I expect a lot more user friendliness with variants that work in North America (global model, not to be mistaken for global rom).  Hopefully, they will include a North America online store on Aliexpress.  Although, shipping out of Asia has its benefits in terms of cheap shipping and generally no tax.

@lara_f, the phone you linked on Amazon will definitely work on the Public Mobile network.  This particular seller also sells a Redmi Note 5 AI global edition which works and has been discussed in this forum.  I purchased the Redmi Note 5 AI as a gift for a friend and I can confirm positively that it works.  The compatible LTE bands are 2, 4, 5, 7.  Xiaomi brand hardware is very well priced.  Buying from Aliexpress is quite a bit cheaper than Amazo but there can be a bit of a wait (~4 weeks) for shipping.

No need to tag mods.  To make things easier to get help You could post a link to the phone you want or even post the band's it supports in the forum.
