VOLTE

Hello everyone. I am behind with knowing what is going on the PM.

My dad has the basic $15/moth 100 mins...I just realized they hiked the price to $18 but whatever. I just saw a text he got from PM , something about volte and to call Telus....well I called them and of course they do not have his info but basically they said he has to transfer to them and that his service will be kaput by March 2027. They even said mine too (I told them I never got any text alert from PM of that being the case)

Now, I am useless when it comes to understanding this.  I think my plan is fine but my dad's is very basic. He truly only needs calling service. at 94 yrs old he finds everything else too complicated and frustrates him more that anything.

Is it true they are decommissioning  his service? Is that based on phone technology? I gave him a Samsung Galaxy A03, is that too old? I am actually shopping for a flip phone. He prefers basic flip phone. What should I look for? And is PM going to be transferring to Telus? I mean, I know Telus owns PM but I am getting so confused and finding it shady that TELUS agent was so eager to make my dad's account transferred in a hurry and not matching what we have here. I repeatedly told them that we only need basic calling service and that's it. I feel like our seniors are being ignored and discounted in this society 😞

Please let me know what I can do besides looking for alternative service provider.  🙏

oh it's a A03

@Yesmil8  A03 might not work.  If you are looking for basic smart phone, a A15 or above would work

what phone your dad has? (It's have, not has)

for a basic phone, you need need to buy a Canadian variant of Nubia Cymbal 2 to stay on the network.  Or you can also check if his phone works on Koodo and move over to Koodo

He states what phone it is in his original post. Furthermore, his father's plan is $18. Both Koodo and Telus's cheapest unlimited plan is $35 per month with unlimited like he has now. There is a $10 per month discount if it comes out of his bank account lowering it to $25. Still more expensive on a seniors budget. Just saying that staying with Public Mobile and getting a affordable flip phone like the ones you and I recommended would be the best options for them.

When the last of the 3G network gets decommissioned next spring, VoLTE calling will be required everywhere. And due to the complexity of VoLTE, carriers are especially focused on validating phone compatibility with their networks. So you'll need both a device that supports VoLTE and a carrier that supports your device. For current devices you can check their compatibility with Public on the link below. For a small subset of devices that may not be supported at Public, Telus may still support them, so that may be an option instead of getting a new device.

Hello @Yesmil8

It's great that you posted all of this to get help on the forums and also help your 94 year old father. So let me get right down to helping you out.

THIS, is 100% false. You do not have to port to Telus. This was nothing more than a greedy sales person trying to profit and up their sales. You can keep both plans, you just need to upgrade your phones. With your fathers, I've got THE perfect phone for him. Here's the link. https://www.visions.ca/tcl-flip-unlocked-4058e-2avhca1

I have recommended this phone to many folks here and they were so happy I did. I have this myself, which is currently sitting in my drawer at the moment... lol...  only because I got a free Samsung S24. But to the point, this is the perfect phone for him and it will 100% work with Public Mobile and will avoid that $5 extra fee for using 3G.

I'm not sure what phone you're using but I too am on the $18 100mb plan as all I need is basic. You yourself may need to upgrade your phone as well as what was said about 3G going bye bye, is true across Canada. Just like it did in the USA.

Hope this helps.

@Yesmil8

here's some reading on that subject with a device checker at the end of the article. If it's not compatible, he'd need a newer cell next year.
