My plan says I have unlimited text but when I reached my data limit I am not able to text anymore (except when on wifi).

Thanks for the help.  I didn't turn FaceTime off, but I can't seem to find it in the settings.  Sorry.

@katiereid

you have done this to unregister iMessage?

At Settings.
Tap Messages.
Turn iMessage off. Go back to Settings.
Tap FaceTime.
Turn FaceTime off. Exit Settings.

Thank you for the tip.  My son is having the same issue with his phone, but when we deselect iMessage, he is unable to send/receive texts from other iPhones, even when connected to wifi.  He only had 250 MB of data, but he has already used it all texting because we didn't realize that sending iMessages used data.  We just assumed that texting was unlimited.  Any suggestions on how to set his phone up so that he is able to text other iPhones and in the future does get unlimited texting, without using data?  Thanks!

@PAH   Look like you are using iMessage or RCS, which needs Data in both cases

Chat-SMS.png

You might want to change it to regular SMS:

On Android (RCS)
(The chat bubbles are dark blue when Chat enabled or light blue when SMS/TXT are used)

On the Messaging app,
tap 3 little dots top right, click Settings
under Chat settings, scroll to "Select default messaging type",
Switch from Automatic to Text/multimedia msg

On Apple
(Blue ones are sent using Apple's iMessage while Green are SMS)

change the iMessage settings by
Click on Settings app,
click Messages,
Turn iMessage off (switch from green to grey)

@PAH : iPhone iMessages uses the old instant messaging method rather than standard SMS texting which uses an internet connection. You need to set it to also use SMS.

Android has some texting apps that use a chat feature that uses the internet too. Turn that option off if you like.
