It all depends on how much data you need per month and how often you travel to the US. If you only go down a few times in a year or only use about 5GB per month, the $36 plan is a big waste of money. And once you sign for an expensive plan, it is very difficult to downgrade to a cheaper one. Only buy what you can reasonably use.
FWIW, you could call Canada for free uf you use an app like TextNow. You get a free VOIP number to call anywhere to and from the US and Canada. I even used it in Japan to call back to Canada toll-free. I can even call forward my public mobile number to the TextNow number so that people can just phone my PM number and the call will be call forwarded to my TextNow number anywhere in the world.
You just need free wifi. Or you can buy a mobile data esim.
