U.S. Moto G 3rd Gen 16GB

   I've come to know that if there is ever a place to find quality support about Public Mobile or about any phone, then the community is the best place to come.

   My question this evening consits of the U.S. Moto G 3rd Gen. I guess you could call me a Motorola fanboy after I purchased the Motorola Moto G (1st Gen) back when Public was switching to it's 4G network, which means that I have also been following the 3rd iteration of the Moto G since it was released back in July of 2015. However, as you may know, Motorola has opted out on selling the handset unlocked in Canada, as well as only distributing the 8GB/1GB variant.

   This begs the question, can I buy the unlocked 16GB/2GB Moto G (3rd Gen) from BestBuy USA, and use it, up here in the Great White North, on the Public Mobile Network? (link provided at the bottom)

   Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been itching to "cop" a new phone as my ancient 1st Gen has slowed down so much, that I am literally pulling out hair when it comes to using it.

@feasteyeson Here in this community, we strongly advise against buying any phone (US/EU or otherwise) without knowing what network technologies and frequencies it supports. Which is why the conversation above references specific frequencies.

As an example, there are plenty of newer US phones that will not be able to use the Telus 4G/LTE frequency. If you're buying a newer model phone, you may (in fact, should) be expecting 4G to work, leading to a big disappointment.

Also, ALL Sprint/Verizon phones will NOT work on Telus' 3G (HSPA+) network. So you will not be able to use any of these phones to make calls, until Telus starts supporting VoLTE. And even then, unless you are certain that a Sprint/Verizon supports FDD-LTE on 1700 MHz (band 4), you will end up with a device that you can only use for internet access over WiFi.

Point is, there's a little bit of research into determining phone compatibility. You can't follow some general guidelines and expect things to work out well when buying a new phone manufactured for a different market.

Most US phones will work in Canada. Avoid any phones intended for the EU as those are sometimes don't give you  4G/LTE.

Any unlock USA phone has a 99% chance of working. Any phone intended for AT&T or T-Mobile has a very good chance of working. Any phones intended for Sprint & Verizon may work.

Hey @DubstepCanada,  according to GSM arena, XT 1540 and XT1548 are the two models that are compatible with PM.  Just make sure to avoid the XT1541 which is not compatible.  

3G bands	HSDPA 900 / 2100 - XT1541
	HSDPA 850 / 1700(AWS) / 1900 / 2100 - XT1540
	HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 1900 - XT1548
4G bands	LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 7(2600), 8(900), 20(800) - XT1541
	LTE band 2(1900), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 17(700) - XT1540
	LTE band 2(1900), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 12(700), 17(700), 25(1900), 26(850), 41(2500) - XT1548

You can check this website before purchasing phone in the future.

I have two 2013 Moto G units, and one 2015 device, and I love using all 3 each day.

The 2015 model that you want is the one which is AT&T compatible (850,1900, 1700, 2100 and 700). The model is the XT1540, which is the designation for the 8 GB iteration.

They say at the bottom that unlocked phones support:

AT&T -  1900 MHz and 850 MHz here

T-Mobile - Frequencies: Band 2 (1900 MHz), Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz), Band 12 (700 MHz) here

So I would think you're good to go

Public Mobile works on following frequencies: 

• For 3G use (UMTS/HSPA): 850MHz/1900MHz bands
• For 4G/LTE use: 1700MHz/2100MHz bands
• For 4G/LTE use: 700 MHz band

You would have to try to get the info of the bands that phone actually supports, but I would guess that it would.
