I am travelling to Australia and I would like to keep my phone number in case I have text or calls coming through. I am wondering now to go about this when I am in Australia. I was going to get an eSIM card but I wasn’t sure if I could still use my neighbour and not have extra charges if I did this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can use WhatsApp using your current PM number is all parties have this app. It can be used when connected to WiFi or on the eSIM data.

I have family that was recently in Vietnam and Thailand (their first time there) while using WhatsApp for free texting and calls.

sorry, PM only offers roaming service for US and Mexico and no other countries.  So, you wont be getting roaming services with the country you are going, and hence you won't get text or calls while you are traveling

We suggest the following workarounds:

  • For calls and text from friends:  install and setup VoIP app TextNow before you get on the trip (while you are in Canada).  You will then able to make and receive calls and text with friends using the other number given by TextNow.  You can even try forwarding your PM number to the TextNow number right before you fly (just make sure you get a Canadian phone number from TextNow)
  • For 2FA text, like from banks or email like Gmail/Hotmail/Apple:  you won't receive on your PM number nor using VoIP app.  So, the only workaround is to change to to receive via email or via Authenticator app if allows.  Please check and arrange with your banks or those important providers before your trip
