Do I have to use a new number first or can the phone number be transferred as is

@Carn , for Koodo prepaid, the number transfer has to be done by support and so you will need to get a temporary number first. I alway encourage new customers to get a temporary number first and then do the transfer as a separate step. Activation failures do happen and if a number transfer is thrown into the mix, it is possible to lose the old service and not have a functioning new service.
