I was registering my SIM card and chose the option to port over my current number but I now realise this will not work. Can I go back and request a new number instead? I can't log in to my account because I'm not receiving any of the verification codes via text.

Try to redirect security code to your email.
It is possible for existing customers, not sure for those in a process of becoming a customers.
Golden rule of thumb is: open an account; pick any number; confirm everything works as expected during few days; only then do number porting...
