SIM card not recognized in new phone

My old cellphone died, bought new phone and received new sim.Went to my account to change the SIM #.

My Umidigi Note 100 5G phone doesn't recognize the SIM CARD despite it being in slot # 1. I have reversed the card - maybe I put in the wrong way but, it still doesn't recognize it. At present time, if I put in my old SIM card it recognizes that one. (My old SIM card sits in my tablet at present.)

Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before the new sim takes effect? I maintained the same cellphone number.

@Japonica , if your old SIM card is still being recognized by a device, then it is probably still the active card for your account.  If you successfully change a SIM card, the change is immediate.  If the old SIM is still working perhaps it is not defective.  It could be the device has a defective SIM reader.
