When you cross the border, you'll get a Welcome to USa message with a nag to buy a talk add-on....just ignore as you have the add-on. Make sure to enable Roaming to use data in US.

official time is 24 to 48 hours, but my experience is usually instant

since roaming addon has expiry of 15 days or 30 , if your trip is shorter than that expiry, just request today
