This is not so much a question as a solution. Last thing I was doing was tethering data. The next time I tried to use the phone I could not connect to the internet except if I was within my home network range. Did the usual - reboot, toggle data off/on.
After some hunting around the internet I found a reference to APN.
My APN indeed had been wiped somehow. A bit more hunting and I ran across this from 2014:
Finding APN on my phone was a bit of a problem but the solution worked like a charm!

and if anyone has similar problems, the 2014 solution is still good.

Yay! It's great to hear such success stories to balance out all the times the problem can only be solved by getting in touch with a PM agent.
