Phone number and caller id issues

masa0945

I have had two occasions where my phone number has been used erroneously.  In the first instance i was called by a person who received multiple calls from my phone number, however, his caller id showed another person's name.  The person phoned me and I had to explain that the calls were not from me and were not in my phone's call log.

In the second instance and more troubling was when I received a call from a person who was in Florida saying that he received a call that showed my phone number and was asked for money.  Are these type of problems common and who and how should they be reported to Public Mobile?

Hello @masa0945 ,

This is annoying, and it can happen to any one of us. Known as spoofing:

This is a common phone spoof.

Scammers call people and have the ability to 'mask' their own number and replace it with another number.  Even though people may think you called them - you didn't.   It won't show on your phone usage records.

If anyone should call you, just tell them it wasn't you and it must have been a scammer.  You don't owe them anything (like an apology) for something someone else has done.

This isn't isn't specific to Public Mobile. Someone is pretending to be calling for your number. As for the name on the display, that's an error in some database on the internet about who the phone number belongs to. Public Mobile does not transmit any name information during an outgoing call. If keeping the phone number is important to you, there's always the option to change your phone number.
