HD voice is not the same thing as VoLTE. Please ignore all of the details revealed through internet searches that show websites that claim that HD voice is required for VoLTE. That information is completely wrong. HD voice uses a group of CODECs and gives no indication that an LTE network is being used. While there are some HD codecs that does require certain network types to be used, that isn't the case for all of them. Public Mobile has had HD voice available for several years on the 3G network.
As for no signal type indicator in the notification area, this is usual behavior for most modern smartphones when there is no data connection (or data has been turned off).
