I have been on Public mobile for 8 months now and I have an Alberta 587 area code and my plan includes province wide calling. My boyfriend and daughters just recently switched to public mobile and have phone numbers with the new 825 area code and I’m unable to call any of them as it tells me it’s long distance and I don’t have a long distance add on. Why would it be long distance if I have province wide calling and we live in the same city????

That was me. I asked a moderator to explain the problem so I can better understand it myself and pass the information along to others who are affected. When a province wide calling feature is selected, the system needs to identify which set of area codes to assign to the account as calls that are considered within the province. There are hiccups from time to time during this step. When that happens, some of the in province area codes are treated as out of province requiring long distance calling. In this particular case with a new area code, it may be a case of not keeping up with changes or it can be a provisioning issue as explained. Although the deployment of the area codes may be somewhat recent, their assignment to a province happens way before then. So there is little excuse in calling an area code new. According to this wiki, we saw it coming a decade ago.

If you are interested, here is another thread about the similar problem with area code 825.
The poster decided to change phone numbers in her self service account to area code 587 (more common area code). Maybe your boyfriend and daughters can choose another phone number via the self service account with a more common area code.
Or you could wait 1-2 days for moderator to get back to you....

The calls do not go through at all. It baffles me.

Try add 1 in front of the 825 phone number. It may help.
If not, send private message to moderator to add 825 area to the AB province.
Good luck

@Lnpenton81, Just to confirm, the calls do not go through? In many cases, there is a message about long distance, but the calls go through. Also, do you have a "1' in front of the number? Otherwise, could be a network issue, but I would be surprised if the network is not aware that the 825 is in the same province, since it has been in use for 2+ years.
