Please try to search the mobile network manually after putting the sim in you New phone instead of automatic search for the networks.
You have to wait about 2 mins for the search to complete.
The search will give you a list of mobile operators. Select the public mobile LTE.
If you have success with this then the next step is to configure your APN for data and mms by following the second step mentioned by @will13am
You need to be careful using manual connection on a phone. The selection survives reboot and since there's no indication of its selection, it can cause unnecessary angst if the phone is used on another network. Always try using auto connection first. If it fails then try manual.

Please elaborate on what is meant by problems connecting? Is there absolutely no connectivity, or is there a connection, but no data. There are many models of zenfone 3 max. Use this site to check phone compatibility on the Public Mobile network.
Assuming you can connect, but have no data, check the APN configuration on the phone.
If these two checks are done, your phone should work.

you can use the same SIM card for different phones (put sim card into phone B if phone A isnt working well). Its what I do sometimes. As long as the sim cards are the same size (nano-nano, micro-micro)

@Heavyrocker what do you mean? Are you transfering the sim between phones or do you mean 2 different numbers on 2 phones
