Minutes for a 801 area code

I attempted to call a company in Utah  with a 801 area code  and was told I need to purchase more minutes. I thought all 800 numbers were toll free. When did things change?

sorry, 801 is not a toll-free area code in the United States or Canada. It is a local area code for Salt Lake City and surrounding areas in Utah.

800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, and 888 are the only toll free area codes
