I'll be traveling out of country for seven months. Normally, I just keep my plan active when traveling. This year I was thinking of putting it on hold if possible. I'd like to keep my number which was ported from another provider 4 years ago. Is this possible if gone for 7 months

Are you on the old rewards system or the newer points system? Are you on an older grandfathered plan that you really like or on a promo of some sort? numberbarn means porting out and thus losing everything about your current account.
If you're diligent then the method to put the service on hold is to turn off the subscription for the renewal that will happen after you leave, (or earlier and then have no service while still home) then 85 days later (do not let it go past 90 days) make a manual payment from wherever you are. You can do this a couple ways. Then you basically waste 30 days of service and then another 85 days, so from that payment is 115 days later make another payment.
So you're paying every 4 months roughly. If not on an old plan and not on a promo then changing down to the $15 is the cheaper way to use this method.

Are you on the legacy rewards program? If you port your number out, if you come back to Public mobile, you will on the new rewards points system.
Another way is the suspend your account and renew every 85-90 days and then suspend again. Here is an article:

you could just lower your regular plan to the $15 plan and let the regular plan renewals occur as usual. You'll be out $105 but you'll have the number when you return. When you get back, upgrade to whichever plan looks good.

Hi @Kob1
There is no way to put your account on hold with Public Mobile. There are ways to perhaps keep it semi active but I won't recommend it in case you forget about it while on your travels.
You may wish to look at this site if you want to keep your number.
