I had a J3 few years ago, bought it at Costco, it locked, to provider SIM card inserted, something to keep in mind if the prime is similar, and if locked to a provider already.

It should be compatible. On willmyphonework.net J7 Prime is compatible with PM. Make sure it is unlocked.

Welcome to PM @grannyhp . What's the submodel of this phone? Some of them aren't compatible with 4g LTE. The phone will work even if not 4g compatible you won't be able to access data when there are only 4g networks available and won't get emergency alerts. Make sure that its unlocked.
Here's 4 articles on activation and porting and the Refer a friend reward if you need them:
1. What you require to activate https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/bc/get-help/articles/what-you-need-to-activate
2.How to activate https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/bc/get-help/articles/activation-account-set-up
3.How to port https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/bc/get-help/articles/choose-your-phone-number
4. Refer a friend https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/on/get-help/articles/the-refer-a-friend-reward
Once you sign insert your sim up do a network reset and restart your phone to get the correct APN settings. Stay safe.
