International SMS

I'm in Mexico. My PM plan is Can-US.

I have a Mexican esim for data. So PM data is off but I left PM on for SMS and calls for now.

Question is: I replied to a couple Canadian SMS' yesterday - received via the PM Sim over AT&T roaming. That worked and so far I don't see an extra charge on my account. Is it likely I'll see a charge later or can I continue to use my PM SMS?

My understanding was international SMS meant I needed to be in Canada. I expected a charge here. Be great if there isn't one but would like to know before I over use. Thanks.

@Pkrobin Ah yes, that explains it then.

And yes, downgrade now to the $30 plan which should then unlock the $35 plan which you can schedule to renew into at your next renewal cycle. Unfortunately when you renew now into the $30 plan you will forgo any unused time in your current cycle (no refund or credit will be provided), but you should do it ASAP because the $35/75GB plan is set to expire on December 31st; but as long as you schedule the plan change before that, you will lock it in.

This is the correct answer. Thank you.

I wasn't sure that RCS was completely separate functionally from SMS and didn't know if I might unintentionally incur roaming charges.

So yes, perfect.

To answer your question, sadly I signed up for a CAN US plan for $36 literally days before the Mexico plan came out and there's no way to directly change it on time for this trip. I'll have it sorted for next year but as far as I can tell I need to first get down to the $30 plan and wait for the next $35 can/us/Mexico deal whenever that will be.

You shouldn't have been able to reply to SMS if you don't have a Mexico plan, so what likely happened is they were iMessage or RCS messages that sent over WiFi. Receiving SMS should work, and is free. No phone calls at all though.

Also note that there will never be any extra charges at Public Mobile because it's a prepaid service; either it works (you paid for it already) or it doesn't (you didn't).

What plan are you on our of curiosity? There is a new $35 plan that covers Mexico as well.

@Pkrobin

you will not be charged later for anything over and above your regular plan cost.

added...if you have a MX data plan...just download the free WhatApp to be able to call / text for free to others with WhatsApp back home and abroad.

hi @Pkrobin since your plan does not have Mexico roaming,you will get the text for free but you won't be able to reply or send.  This is normal
