Inability to receive texts or calls when abroad is finally pushing me away to Rogers

Let me preface this by saying that I absolutely love PM. I've been a customer for many long years and I'm so happy whenever I use it in Canada, and I'm proud of how the brand has grown, and service and plans improved.

However, PM was also a source of the most traumatic vacation experience I have ever had. Long story short, just days into my 1-month vacation, my phone software gave up on me, and after factory reset, of course I was unable to receive any two-factor authentication text messages, as there is no way to use a public mobile number outside of Canada and the US - the one major deficiency that I suspected would one day hurt me with PM. As a result, I was locked out of my bank, my Google account, AND the Public Mobile account (as after recent changes there was no way to 2FA via e-mail), among others.  As it happens, most of the critical services don't have a fallback anymore - it's text message or bust.

The consequences were immeasurable, as I was not able to retrieve my return flight information, I was not able to pay for planned airbnb stays (2FA for CC was out), I was not able to use Uber, Paypal, order food, change, check or pay my CC, check my bank statements for troubling transaction, or use any of the services that relied on my e-mail address or phone number. Frankly, it was a hellish ride.

As an unfortunate coincidence, during the same 1 month of no cell service I also lost my spot for a medical procedure, as I was not able to receive calls from my doctor trying to slot me into a new opening.

All the money I saved over the years with PM and much more was gone in a moment to mitigate this disaster caused by a policy that I knew could lead to trouble. I just never realized how big this risk would be. In the past, the lack of roaming functionality was painful to swallow, but it felt more like an inconvenience - all I had to do was get local phone numbers for data that were usually significantly cheaper than roaming packages.

However, in this day and age of SMS 2FA for everything, and remote "work from anywhere", having a cell service provider become virtually useless after leaving the country is inexcusable. I only now realized that this service policy oversight can be so dangerous. And the fact that workarounds don't cost providers nearly anything, or even make them a lot of money (in case of roaming packages), for the first time I felt like Public Mobile / Telus knowingly put their users in potential danger to maintain service segmentation.

This really hit me when I noticed that Rogers, Fido or Freedom all allow wifi-calling from abroad, where you can call or text during your vacation abroad for free as if you were in Canada (as long as you are connected to a wifi network). Needless to say, this is where after so many happy years with PM, I am going. Making a decision I am not happy with, leaving a brand I was really happy with (as long as I was in Canada), to a brand I never particularly wanted to switch to, due to outdated and potentially dangerous service policy decisions that have really hurt me.

As for why not another Telus or Bell brand, it is because they lock out Wi-fi calling from abroad to upsell their money cow of roaming packages - wi-fi calls go through, but get cancelled if a foreign IP address is detected. The infrastructure is literally there - some people have had luck with them going through if they use a VPN, but Telus/Bell are the North Korea of Canadian mobile service providers and lock their traveling users out behind a firewall to force them to spend big bucks on roaming packages if their phone faces issues and they still wish to return back home to Canada, or their doctors call.

Well, at least the other Telus/Bell brands offer roaming, so if one has an emergency situation, they are able to pay to use their phone. Public mobile did not give me this option, which sent me through a very unfortunate experience that I was hoping I would never wish to anyone.

For the sake of Public Mobile users, hoping that nobody else has to go through what I went through, here's my final message to Public Mobile / Telus:
Making your phone numbers virtually useless abroad is no longer an accepted segmentation strategy. In the age of 2FA via text for anything critical, it is putting your users in danger, with no fallback options if anything goes awry. Please, seriously consider:

1. Enabling wi-fi calling abroad to its users. At least for received texts/calls. It is going to cost you nearly nothing, as no roaming deals need to be made, and the infrastructure literally exists.

2. If the above is too much to ask, please enable roaming to at least allow users to receive communication abroad (which all budget cell service providers on earth that I'm aware of, outside of Canada, allow for free)

3. Or at the very least allow users to purchase roaming packages. You'll make a big buck, save your users' from potential danger, and maybe keep some more of them with you before they get burned like I was.

Indeed, those are good examples where you simply need a static Canadian number that can receive texts/calls abroad. I don't think globally there are still many carriers that restrict international roaming and make your number useless while you travel. I've got a Thai and Polish sim cards that continue receiving text messages in Canada for free. I just extend their validity once per year. In Canada, I have to pay at least 100x more to maintain my number, yet cannot receive 2FA texts the moment my flight takes off, until I'm back. It's unacceptable in 2024.

This doesn't work if you need a Canadian number for 2 Step verification, for example if you order something online with your VISA while you are out of the country. Forget getting through to CRA if you are away for tax time.

Thank you for posting this. I was considering switching to Public Mobile and trying to understand what they offer when you travel abroad. Turns out it's a real nightmare. I use eSims for data, but indeed being able to receive SMS messages when abroad is an absolute must.

@Ziojoe04  It's not too bad to use local sim, usually it is cheaper and more data and you can better support in case something happens than using roaming  🙂

Wow that's horrible.  I learned the hard way about the US roaming on my phone and didn't have it setup properly until the second day.  I would likely purchase a new SIM if I was travelling outside north America.  But this is pretty sad.

@Karenbelcourt understand your frustrations. But roaming working or not depends on the network coverage and reliability of the roaming partner, T-Mobile in this case. Personally, I would choose local prepaid data sim as the roaming trouble could occur with any providers

So, where in US were you in? And you are still in US now?

I will definitely be going to another provider. This is the second time that add on in the states is not working. And I have had 0 help. I’m done

@deecatty  I’m confident they will make it right for you . Not everything perfect . But the plans are priced right

@deecatty  are you still in US? Which city and state you are in?

If you are back in Canada already, message support and they will reverse the transaction:

**Monitor your Community inbox (envelope icon on top right) after the ticket is opened.  CS Agent will reply to you there

But if you are still in US, hope this helps
  • If the phone is not connecting to T-Mobile, change the Network Connection from Automatic to Manual and select T-Mobile

  • If your issue is with data, make sure your Roaming Mobile data is enabled and your have disabled your mobile data limiter

  • If your issue is with voice, make sure VoLTE is enabled on the device setting.  And if it does not work, try to change the Preferred Network Type or Network Mode to 2G and see if the calls goes through
Also, you can download VoIP app TextNow as a workaround to make calls and text if you have Wifi or if your roaming has data component and data  is working

@deecatty   Please

message support directly

Hi Simon247.

I agree with everything you've said. Why we can't get texts or wifi calling when outside of Canada is a mystery. This will probably be my last month with PM as I have found the service to be problematic from the start. I was cut off completely without warning on my due date last month and it took most of my day to get it up and running again. My international minutes ran down when I was out of the country with my phone and could not possibly have used them. I was told that this did not happen. Luckily I saved the screenshot and kept a photo of the screen showing minutes used when I was on the other side of the world. All in all a frustrating couple of years with no upside. I never have this problem with Optus in Aus.  For a couple of bucks more, one can get a real service. Sometime for a couple of bucks less...

Indeed, and these days other Canadian providers not only offer pre-paid plans with roaming packages (so not to worry about roaming charges), but also free Wi-fi calling/texting abroad that does not require the purchase of roaming packages and allows calls/texts to go through for free over IP (and thus being a low hanging fruit to implement).

I really wish I didn't have to leave Public Mobile as I was otherwise so happy with the service, but I feel like I'm being forced out by the lack of a feature that's becoming increasingly critical to anyone thinking of ever leaving Canada, even just to enjoy their vacation without stress. I believe only PM and Lucky Mobile are the last Canadian mobile services that still don't work abroad.

Speaking of, is there a way to reach out to someone at Public? Or check if/where is this on their roadmap?

@simon247 - sad experience for sure.

Since I have been a Public Mobile customer, I have not been overly impressed with USA roaming, and I would cautiously warn anyone, I know personally, to use services outside of Canada (due to various reasons). There is a beauty in not having to worry about Roaming charges ever with this prepaid Public service if you don't have applicable addons; and I do recall the ease of switching to services outside of Canada on my previous Canadian mobile plans automatically (though I recall those were expensive times...). Much better options these days imo.

@esjliv just reference all the posts @computergeek541  has removed regarding the selling and buying of products / accounts on here.

Is that really against the rules to discuss that @XionBunny ? Why would that be?

A tour de force. Wonderfully said. I have a US service that costs an average of $2.50USD per 30 days. It has volte and vowifi with limited quantities of minutes, texts and data. Two dollars and fifty cents. Not $13. Not $15, Not $25. Not $30 for all roaming just in the US for 15 days. Not $50 just for Quebec numbers.

I got a UK service recently for what amounted to about $17 for 30 days for 30 gigs of data. I could have spent less for less data but I didn't want to leave a balance behind. I barely used over a gig in about 10 days.

Canada is unbelievable for telecom services.
