Hi folks,
If this is repetitive information, please forgive me, as I don't recall seeing this posted before. I'm here to let you know (you may already!) that Public Mobile community member @IWIK has built a great data usage tracking application for Android, named "Data Witness". You can find it in the Google Play store here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iwik.datawitness
--------------
EDIT 2021-Sept-29: you no longer need to reach out to IWIK to get a free voucher. Instead, just install the "Data Witness PM" app, which is free for use on Public Mobile network:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iwik.datawitnesspm
--------------
IMPORTANT NOTE: The app does cost a small amount on Google Play Store, but, thanks to @IWIK's generosity, he is giving it away FREE for Public Mobile users! To get it free, send @IWIK a private message, and [s]he will respond with a download code to get it for free.
What does it do?
Once installed and configured (more on that shortly), you can track your data usage against your plan alltoment, and it allows flexibility for PM's 10, 30, and 90 day plans and any data amount you choose. The easiest way to use it once all set up is to create a (or multiple) widget on one of your home screens, and it looks roughly like this:
You can see it here in the middle of my screen. You can customize this highly when you create the widget--custom colours, opacity of the background, etc. But in a nutshell it shows you the percentage of your plan's data allotment you've used so far this term, how many days are left in this term, and even gives you bar graphs so you can visualize this info. You can see in mine, my days are slightly ahead of my data usage, so I'm tracking well to not run out of data during this 90 day cycle.
If you don't want to set up a widget, you can also get this info by just going into Data Witness:
Installing and configuring
You can install it from the Play store link I used above. Launch the app and there you can set up a number of configuration items. Here's the main config menu:
From here, you'll want to pop into General settings and set up you plan details:
Log into your PM self-serve account and grab your current data usage amount and use that in the first setting shwon above. At your next renewal date, this will reset automatically to zero, as DW will be with you from the start of that cycle instead of part way through. Set your data limit based on what's in your plan (I'm on the 6GB/90 days plan), and your plan length and your last cycle start date. This is all you need to do to start benefitting from Data Witness right away!
There are a number of other settings you can tweak. I don't fully understand all of them, but this is how I currently have mine set up:
(I'm not sure of the ramifications of not having it check while the screen is off.)
Here you can tell it (using the sliders) when to let you know you're getting close to using up your data, and optionally have a persistent notification (you probably don't want that on, but it's a personal preference).
That's all there is to setting it up and basic usage. As I mentioned, there are a ton of options to personalize your widget(s). First of all there are two widget sizes to choose from:
And once you choose one and place it on a home screen, a ton of settings:
Enjoy!

Wow, I'm on this community for quite a while and just found out about this app!! Great, app, thanks for making it 🙂

Every time this thread is referenced in a new thread or response, I read through it, and pick up little bits from it.
I love the way this forum works, and how everyone is so awesome about it.
The cool part is the interaction with the developer is so fluid.

@IWIK not sure if this is the right area, but my wishlist would be to have a daily budget reminder/alert. Ie data remaining/ days left = daily budget.

@IWIK, i find the renewal point has been changing since I first installed the software on my device. when I signed up, renewals happened at 21h00 Toronto time, on the payment due date. Now, 20 or so months later, it’s happening at 06h00 on the renewal date, 9 hours later.
I don’t know if this matters or not, but just a thought of something that might be an issue.

So it's been a long time since an update here, things have been crazy, I've finally left the counter going for a few full consecutive terms and yes I think the 90 days is off, I'll be updating that ASAP. It's a little confusing to check as I'm not 100% sure when exactly terms are starting and ending (like do you get that 90th day? half of the first day?)
Anyway, we will be moving forward soon.

outside of just the 30/60/90 reminders, from what i see visually you sorta have to do the math in your head regarding percentages used vs overall. would you be able to spread the months apart in a vertical graph chart, possibly a different colour per 30 day period, and have those graph bars fill as you use your data? i think the visual feedback provided by that in conjunction with the reminders would round this app out fairly nicely and give a little boost to the aesthetic of the GUI.
where the $ figures are could be 10% - 20% - 30%, etc
where the city names are could be days 1-30 / 31-60 / 61-90
just a thought to spruce up the inside of the GUI, mate.

@mistaliu I like the idea of multiple configurable data warnings as you have outlined, that's a great idea to help people budget their bucket during their 90 day plans. @IWIK is that something you can do?
Regarding the Nougat issue, yes it seems to be a limitation at the moment. I have the same issue on my OnePlus 3 running 7.0 (OxygenOS 4.0.2 currently). I remember IWIK saying this was something he wasn't sure how to work around (if even possible at all) but he would revisit at some point. Would be nice if possible! 🙂

@IWIK, I just reinstalled today... I had a problem getting the GB amount to recognize 12288 MB, but it wasn't your app, it was my vision.
All good to go now :-). Thanks again for your App!

Hey fellow PM'ers, just a little New Year update.
I promise I'll get back into the swing of things and make some updates for Data Witness (+PM) Things have just been quite busy around here lately. There's definitely some features that would be welcomed.
Fun fact: Data Witness and Data Witness PM collectively have over 500 current active users!
Thanks to everyone who has helped along the way!
PS Anyone who is having trouble when using Android 4.4 please private message me.

@mgc Glad you are having a good experience with it. Generally that seems to be the trend, Data Witness showing slightly higher usage than Public's official.

Thanks for the feedback, @mgc. 🙂

Hi all. Been using Data Witness for almost 2 months now, wanted to share my experience.
Overall, it is working great.
I am not a heavy user, but my wife uses my WiFi hotspot to watch Youtube videos during our daily commute.
When I first started using DW, I was manually tapping the "Force usage check now" button after finishing my internet sessions -- if I remembered! The usage numbers were significantly less than Public Mobile's website. I believe it is because I kept forgetting to tap that button before restarting my phone, which I did often because it was buggy - in fact, it would crash & reboot by itself at least a couple times a week.
Now I have monitoring enabled, set to run every 30 minutes. DW's number is usually a bit less than PM's, but given I have a 12GB plan I think the amount is insigificant.
Thanks again

@neptune I will private message you a code for the paid Data Witness and you can uninstall Data Witness PM and use this instead. If that solves the problem I have a few ideas.

Thanks for replying @IWIK.
I'm running the Data Witness PM app, and its the most current version. Nothing new on play store for it.
Any ideas?

@moddy it is designed this way as I find notifications that can't be cleared incredibly annoying. It's persistent in the sense it doesn't clear when you tap it and go into the app. If people prefer notifications that can't be cleared I'm sure that could be changed.

@srlawren - Thank you for much for the continuous support.
@IWIK - I got your private message, truly thankful for the prompt response and the redemption code. I am now able to start monitoring my data usage,
As a side question, I tried enabling "Show persistent notification with usage" but the setting will not stick as I am still able to clear the notification and will need to re-enable each time for it to show (monitoring did continue to run smoothly), is that user error on my end?
I am running Nexus 5 with Android 6.0.1.
Please advise,
Thanks again

@neptune hmmm, this is strange, are you running Data Witness or Data Witness PM?
And just so I know can you make sure you're up to date?

I've installed this on my LG G3 running MM, and it works.. sometimes.
More often than not, when I start the app, the monitoring function has stopped. So usage over many days is not recorded. I have to manually start the monitoring pretty much everytime I open the app to check usage.
Help is appreciated!
Thanks

@moddy I sent you a private message

@moddy you're welcome! 🙂
In order for @IWIK to send you a redemption code, he will need to have your gmail address that you use on your phone/Play store. Please send him a private message with your gmail address and hopefully he can get that out to you fairly soon. 🙂

Thank you @IWIK for making this great program to help tracking the data usage for all PM users.
I just signed up to PM yesterday for the Fall 2016 Promo and installed the latest version of your program (1.0.6) from the Google Playstore.
I then follow the setup guide outlined by @srlawren (thank you for being so descriptive) and everything went well until I tried to click on "Start Monitoring", then I saw the prompt showing an incompatible SIM.
My phone do show the same Telus network like @kingstonian, but never did have issue with data connection, or had to change APN settings when I first insert the SIM.
May I please request the redemption code at your earliest convenience?
Much appreciated.

@VictoriaBC just send me a private message when you're ready!

Thanks to @IWIK for making the app and @srlawren for all the instructive posts, woot!!
It's great that there's a freebie code. Especially for those of us who don't mind paying the small app fee but don't want enabled payment / credit cards on file on their phones. I went through quite the itunes hassle on an iphone & ipad allowing then blocking payment through their cascading settings. Eventually set up one master account and put everything else under a family sharing group - not that ideal but the best option in my case. Itunes can be pretty forceful at times 😉
Hopefully I'll find a used nexus soon & try out the app. Kinda rare in these woods.

@mianmokash I will private message you with a redemption code.
11-10-2016 03:58 PM
@mianmokash further to what @imm1304 said, the way it works is....
1) get the code from @IWIK
2) launch the play store on your phone
3) tap the "hamburger" menu (the three horizontal bars near the top left, beside the "Google Play" text)
4) tap on Redeem in the menu
5) type (or copy and paste) the code from step 1 and tap the Redeem button
6) it should take you to a screen to download the app without having to pay the $1
