Hello,

I received a message from public mobile stating that they received a request to port out my number. I am very worried and would like urgent help before my number gets stolen. What is the best way to get this actioned before it is too late?

Hello,

The Public Mobile Moderators are great and have done everything I asked of them. I have a new account number now.

Thank again for everyone's help.

@geopublic, I took all necessary steps to prevent such a thing. All my passwords are changed and I have Multi-factor authentication for all accounts that use a different number/email except here. If this **bleep** want's to try again, let him. I'd like to see him succeed. Only lowest of the low scam people because they have given up on life.

Hello Guys,

I got a call from Telus since they apparently deal with porting. The fraudster only knew my name and address, but failed to put the correct account number. It looks like this is what stopped him. He does not have the correct account number. I contacted the Moderator regardless to change the account number becuase I don't believe a warning on the account will stop this from happening again.

I will keep you guys updated since this will help other people who may go through the same issue. (God forbid, no body should have to deal with this.)

@wordup41  Sounds like the warning was a complete waste of time if they have your account#. Also, looks like that individual really wants to get control of your number. If I were you I would go through any online account and change all the passwords immediately.

@wordup41  Thanks for letting me know. Good to know that they did that. I think I'm going to contact them and ask them to do the same for my account.

Thanks again!

Great. Now there'll be an influx of people cramming the queue asking for the feature.

I think I'll wait. It's a great idea though and nice of them to do something like that.

After hearing back from the Public Mobile Moderator, it turns out that someone indeed tried to port my number out to Bell. The port was stopped and was reported to Bell as a warning. I would like to thank everyone for providing me with the necessary precautions to stop the port before it happened. I still do not understand how someone acquired my account information... Usually a full name, number, address, and account number is required. I have never provided my account number to anyone. I have contacted Transunion, Equifax, and my bank just to put a warrning on my accounts just incase.

@wordup41  Thanks for the update. Did PM issue you a new account number since your current one seems to be compromised. Otherwise what stops the bad actor from trying again with another provider.

Good work. Now you can go back and Resume your service that you Suspended yesterday.

@zero_gravityActually if you google the link https://bit.ly/2CDoc2k it is an official Public Mobile URL. It has been used on their Facebook page eg. Unless you think their Facebook page had been hacked too.

I agree that this looks like a phishing attempt. That link is suspicious at best, it's certainly not a link from PM. Interesting that this is so targeted if it is phishing though.

You did everything right here. You were suspicious of both the porting request and the message itself right from the get go. You've alerted the mods to investigate just in case something really is going on.

It might seem like a no brainer to some of us, but it can be easy to fall for something like this. Good work.

@wordup41 @  porting requires your tel number, name and one of pin, imei, account number and for it to be active.

As an added precaution I would change your name to "do not port", mods are replying in about 4 days.

I just tried the link in the message.  It redirects to the Public Mobile comminuty, and starts a private message to the moderator team (if you are logged in).

@wordup41  Sounds like you did everything right. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Looks like a phishing attempt to me.

@wordup41  Good. Best to wait for a response from the moderator team. I think you can only change your PIN through making a request from the moderator team.

Edit: You should attach a copy of the screenshot when messaging the moderator.

Please keep us posted.

@wordup41  Hopefully you did not click on that link. How did you message the moderators?

@stonechucker. The text came from 480-0. Is that legit? I am still able to login and I still had service 30 minutes after the text message. I reported my number lost but I still see Public Mobile as my carrier but I am not able to make or reecive calls\texts.

To be completely honest, I have no idea.  That’s not a short code I’ve ever scene, and as such, I would start searching on Google to see if it’s previously been searched and reported as anything.

Your plan is safe right now, as your number is marked as stolen.

@wordup41  Are you sure the message was from Public Mobile? What type of message was it? Can you post a screenshot minus any personal info.

Is it at all possible that this is message that is fake?  Did it come from a short code used by Public Mobile, or from a spoofed telephone number? Chances are good this is a nothing situation.

@wordup41 , are you able to attempt a login to confirm whether the number has been ported out?  If it has, then the account will have closed.  You can also try calling your number to see if the "guilty party" will answer or that the number is still working on a different service.

wordup41
Good Citizen / Bon Citoyen

Perfect! Thank you for your help. I've suspended my service until I hear back from a Public Mobile moderator. I really hope whoever is trying to steal my number is unsuccessful since I reported it stolen.

@wordup41Yes you would loose service while you are suspended.. hopefully triggering Lost/ Stolen will put a stop to the automated porting process.. as getting a response from a moderator takes a while up to 48 hours.

Lost / Found serviceLost / Found service

Log into My Account / Plan & Add-ons...look for Lost / Stolen tab. Click to Suspend service. You're phone will not work while it's "Lost"

I still have service, how do I report lost or stolen?

@wordup41Do you still have service? If so, the porting hasn't happened yet. You can try to put your phone as Lost/Stolen as both porting in and out accounts have to be active for the port to be successful.
