Definitely worth a try to DM the mods. However, if it was a number previously ported in from another provider there's a pretty good chance it's gone for good as it would have been returned to them.

If it was just done recently, there may be a chance. No guarantees though. However, you may also be blocked by PM's restriction that a phone number can only be changed once every 30 days.
