Just bought a Huawei Y5 2017 unlocked.  Will it work on public mobile?

The Public Mobile billing system has a bad habbit of "forgetting" to charge sales taxes on the very first payment.   It's too bad that you didn't run into that billing system bug.

You are correct.  You pay the tax on $2 on the first statement, but since the second statement is lowered by an additional $2, you recoup the taxes after 30 days.  Still hurts when you have to pay for a sim card when you plan on doing business with them in the long-term.

Your first payment is the full amount, your auto pay reward will be applied to the second payment.

So, if you pay by credit card

Payment 1: $32 + tax

Payment 2: ($32 - $2 -$2) + tax

Payment 3: ($32 - $2) + tax

Payment 4: ($32 - $2) + tax

etc

(only based on auto pay rewards, community/referral/loyalty rewards are applied the same way if you've earned them)

@Double_J, Are you sure that tax is charged before the $2 auto-pay discount.  That doesn't match up with what others have indicated, and what is advertised.

Tried it on Telus and it worked.  Purchased the $30 1GB Plan today and inserted the SIM Card and it works just fine.

A little dissapointed had to pay $10 for a SIM card though.

Your best option would be to find someone local who is with Public Mobile and pop their SIM into your phone. Also, some Walmart stores sell PM SIMs. There are other stores as well that sell them. I don't know what those are. Perhaps someone else can chime in with that info.

If you can borrow an active sim card from someone who uses any of Bell Mobility, Telus Mobility, Public Mobile, Koodo Mobile, Virgin Mobile, or Lucky Mobile, trying that person's sim card is a good test for compatibility of compatibility with Public Mobile voice calling.

Could this be the model?  Anyway, if this phone does not have 850/1900 Mhz for on 3G, it won't work with any carrier in Canada.  If the phone has this on the 3G, then you can use it with any carrier, except Freedom.  Generally, anything from Asia will not work with Freedom.

If frequencycheck.com's information has the right specs listed, you will be fine for 3g but will have limited LTE service.  The only way to know for sure is try a Public Mobile sim card in it.  Besides, it can't hurt as you've already purcahsed it.

Its too late I have already bought this from Asia and will not be returning it.  I will have to take this phone to whichever company is able to provide the service.

4G speeds are not important for me as this plan is intended to be used by a senior citizen.  I would be satisfied with 3G speeds if I can make this phone work on the $30 plan with 500 MB of 3G data.  Alternatively, if the internet cant work on this device, then I would consider only talk and text with Public Mobile if I know those services will work with this device.

Based on the information that I am looking at, MYA-L22 should work with Public Mobile on the 3g network.  However, this variant of the Huawei Y5 2017 doesn't look like it was intended for North American use as the LTE frequencies that I see here lack LTE bands 2 and 4, which would be important for use if you wanted to use LTE for faster data speeds.  This is all assuming of course that that the website (frequencycheck.com) is providing accurate specifications.

As for the accuracy, frequencycheck.com has got the 4g compatbility percentage wrong.  You will get LTE coverage in some places on LTE bands 5 and 7.

I would look for a North American specific variant of this model.

@Double_J, I believe you will need LTE in order to get data.  Although PM offers a 3G data plan, it is actually carried over the LTE bands - if i am not mistaken.  Phone service & texting should work.

My specific model number is: MYA-L22

I checked will my phone work and it is not displayed.  I use frequencycheck.com as you can match the model of the phone with the carrier.  Here are my results.  It says 0% for 4G.  I am looking at signing up under the $30 plan with 500 MB at 3G speeds.  Will my phone work under public mobile and be able to use the 3G 500 MB of data on the plan?

As with many other brands, Huawei has often made different variants of marketed phone models.  These companies will sometimes release one version for Asia, another for North America, Europe, etc., all of which support different frequency and network type configurations.  Simply looking up Y5 2017 may not be enough provide accurate information.  Huawei usually uses a longer, more specific model number that will be printed ont he label inside the phone and on the packaging with the serial number and UPC code.

@Double_J GSMArena doesn't show the LTE bands for some reason, but it does break down the 3G HSPA frequencies, and it contains both required bands:  850MHz (band 2) and 1900MHz (band 5):

This means, it should be fine for calls, texts, and 3G data (up to HSPA+ speeds).  However, it's a mystery what it supports for faster LTE data.  Fully compatible, but you may not get top speeds if it doens't have the right LTE band(s).  (ideally at least band 4, with bands 2, 5, 7, 12/13, 17 also very helpful)

I wasn't able to find an actual list of supported bands. The model listed on willmyphonework.net is not compatible.

If the bands don't match the phone will not work on Public Mobile.

@Double_J, You can check out compatibility at https://willmyphonework.net/ .  You can enter your phone brand/model country, and provider (Public Mobile), and it would give you an idea about compatibility.
