@Beverley also here is an older Post by @Luddite regarding iPhone 5.
That carrier setting is not correct. Go again to Settings >> General >> About and wait a moment; if a carrier update is offered install it. On my iPhone carrier version is Public Mobile 32.0.
If your phone is not on iOS 10, best to update it.

1- If data is not working try airplane mode for a few minutes. Turn off and try again. If not working #2
2 - reset network settings. Note you will lose saved wifi passwords. If not working after that #3
3- Plug phone with wire and connect to computer. Open iTunes and see if it pushes any updates. Carrier updates or any update. Update them all.
This is provided that you looked into your account and ensured that you have data remaining and didn't use it all up.

Log into your account and look at My Data and Add-ons to make sure you have data available to you.
Make sure data is enabled in Settings on the I5.
