I used up half my data yesterday just by texting. Does anybody else have this problem? I didn't send any photos or gifs.....

This setting is only on iPhone and it saves battery life. Go to Setting>General>Background app refresh and turn off most apps but leave on your email accounts.

I'm never heard of any setting called a background app refresh, but refershing the data for apps in the background would actually use more data. If you don't want to use large amounts of data, you'd want to disabled background data. That can be done at the specific app level in the devcie's settings menu.

Lots of iMessages- but still can't believe I used up half when I was connected to wifi most of the day at work.

Do you have a lot of apps and is the background app refresh enabled?

Are you using either iMessage or RCS chat (android)? These texting services will use data.
MMS text (picture) requires data to be turned on and will be recorded in your usage history, but it should not deduct from your data allotment.
