My new phone number has only been connected to my home WIFI. Last night, I was finally able to activate my SIM on my new-to-me-phone, and activate my phone number. Why is it showing that there's already 6MB of data usage on my account?

That is a common thing that customers see and has been reported in the past. No need to worry, there will not be a constant leakage of data that you did not use. Sometimes the phone need some background data usage. Also, the way Public mobile report data is sometimes delayed.
