Hi All,
Yesterday I moved my two lines from Fizz, which I was on since their BETA phase, and used their online system to Buy and Setup them using e-sim.
Unfortunately when doing SpeedTest (in app) or other type of speedtest online (fast etc.. ) I get very bad speed.
Like sometime 5.34MB/s and 0,30MB/s on both phones (OnePlus 12 & Samsung Note 22 Ultra.
I've check the APN setting and the prefered network and it's set correctly.
It seems like I'm in a 5G coverage spot but phones will only connect to 4G (shown in the notification bar). That could be a part of the solution but I tried an app that force 5G only and I ended with no network.
I'm not sure what to do at that point and consider leaving Public Mobile..
thanks..!!

@slusagm My guess is Telus is throttling a lot in my area to keep Telus above in speed. It's not normal to have to tweak and I tried everything I could find online too.
That, on both my OnePlus 12 and Samsung Note 22 Ultra.
Seconds after moving back to Fizz I was getting that speed, in my basement and without any tweaks.
I am really thankful to everyone who helped me here..!

sometimes it just takes a bit of time to tweak the phone for the best settings. Sad to see you gone

So it lasted 24h... No answer from the ticket and speed that were laughable...
I returned to Fizz... Same location and 4G network too. Distance to towers about the same..

@DiaLFonZo , the signal strength is very good! It is hard to explain the poor data rate. The only thing I can think of is network congestion.

Looking at your map, take a drive towards the towers in Crabtree. If your speeds jump up in both 4G and 5G, then location is a possible source of your problem.
Another possible explanation is Network traffic. Telus (and PM) is a popular and heavily used Network. Fizz is less so. All things being equal, the extra traffic and usage of Telus would result in lesser speeds. Try doing your same speed test in the middle of the night when everybody is asleep. Perhaps your speeds will increase during less busy times. Good luck.
Who said 5G has less range? Range depends on the spectrum frequency. Higher frequency means potentially faster speed but shorter range. If you look at the spectrum table, AWS is used for both 4G and 5G. If your phone was connected to the AWS frequency, 4G vs 5G will make no difference in terms of range. There is no way to force the phone onto any particular frequency. This is all handled by the network. Please do not spread misinformation.

Yes. It is possible that the new connection could be the cause. And resetting the network by a customer agent on their end may solve the problem, or at least provide temporary relief.

@DiaLFonZo , the speeds you are experiencing are pretty bad even on 4G. I have a S20FE which only connects to LTE despite being 5G capable and I have decent data performance. I would have thought the Note 22 would be able to connect to 5G. The OnePlus may be a wild card as it is not a brand that carriers sell. As for 5G and VoLTE performance, the Public Mobile brand can be very YMMV. They seem to offer the lowest compatibility compared to other carrier brands.

First, on your end (and this is advice directly from PM customer agents and Tech support from Telus), you can reset your network connection in your phone and reboot your phone. Next, you can switch your preferred network from 5G recommended to 4G/LTE. The latter forces the phone to use the stronger and longer range 4G signal, which could give you a stabler connection with faster speed.Next, get a tower locator app and determine how far away the Telus (or Bell) Tower is from your current location. For example, one explanation for your problem is that your fizz Tower was only 1 km away while the Telus tower is 5 km away.
I'm actually on 4G, never connected to 5G as I explained. I don't know why neither my phone or my girlfriend would not connect to 5G if we are in a location with 5G. (both 5g compatible phones)
I've looked at the towers and it seems like Videotron (fizz) and Telus have their tower at exactly the same spot.
Seems like I am in the 5G spot as well
As you advised, I added those to the ticket.
Thanks for helping..!
Can it still be something like it's only been activated yesterday ?

That is slow! I have dealt with speed issues in the past.
First, on your end (and this is advice directly from PM customer agents and Tech support from Telus), you can reset your network connection in your phone and reboot your phone. Next, you can switch your preferred network from 5G recommended to 4G/LTE. The latter forces the phone to use the stronger and longer range 4G signal, which could give you a stabler connection with faster speed.
Next, get a tower locator app and determine how far away the Telus (or Bell) Tower is from your current location. For example, one explanation for your problem is that your fizz Tower was only 1 km away while the Telus tower is 5 km away.
Finally, contact the customer agent and provide them with the above information. The customer agent will ask you if you have carried out all of this above steps. The customer agent can then reset the network on their end and sometimes that may improve your connection and speed. But that is about all the customer agent can do.
If the agent still cannot improve your speeds, and if you continue to complain, they may then escalate you to Telus tech support. At that point, you may receive emails or telephone calls to try to resolve your problem. If it is a technical issue with their existing system and hardware, they will let you know and fix it.
However, If the issue is caused by a poorly located Tower in relation to your location, you will have to wait until Telus builds new infrastructure, for example, a new tower or micro tower. Unfortunately, that could take years.
Good luck.

Yes, also a 5g plan
03-28-2025 10:30 AM
@DiaLFonZo she is getting 40mbs at the moment at work (40km away) in a larger city
Is she also on a 5G plan? If she's on a 4G speed plan the cap is 100 Mbps. When things are busy the speeds do get slower, and that's not a terrible speed - all the carriers list their speed as the max as I'm sure you know.

I did it on my OnePlus only, I went all out reset every setting including network.
The sim are e-sim so can't swap them. I could try delete it and re-activate but don't exactly know how or if it's possible.

hi @DiaLFonZo
did you try Reset Network Settings both phones?
Also, try to swap the sim card, that would refresh the accounts and that might bring better speed
03-28-2025 10:13 AM
I've sent a ticket earlier today about it 😁
My OnePlus connected on 5g in the US when using Fizz (T-Mobile etc).
The Samsung was bought from Samsung Canada so yes. My girlfriend told me she is getting 40mbs at the moment at work (40km away) in a larger city. Which is still slow..

@DiaLFonZo I didn't think the APN all caps would change anything since it's not that you can't connect at all, but thought it was worth a try as it is a known thing with OnePlus. Is the Samsung a Canadian version? Have either connected to 5G on other carriers? Since you're still getting poor speeds on 4G the only other thing I can think of other than trying when you're in a different location is to ask PM customer service to look into it in case something needs adjusting at their end.

@Phil_Adelphus wrote:@DiaLFonZo Is it the same when you're out and about? If you're connecting at all I'm not sure if this is part of the problem but with OnePlus the APN line needs to be SP.MB.COM in all caps. My iPhone is set to 5G Auto but only gets LTE in the house but even then the speeds can be almost up to PM's 5G speed cap of 250Mbps. If you want customer service to investigate, open a ticket using the chat icon bottom right of this page.
I've only tested at home (upstairs / basement / outside) with the same results.
Just tried with the APN in caps but that doesn't change anything for me.
