Compatibility

Hi!

I just entered my IMEI number on Public Mobile to find out if my phone is compatible with the 5G network. It is not. What do I need to do now? Will I lose my service? I have until March 2027.

Thank you in advance!

If database does not show your phone is compatible open a ticket and ask agent to confirm it in mail. Agents have access to more complete database than customers.

If agent confirms your phone is Not compatible you have 2 option:
1. If you want to stay with PM you have to get new more modern phone (mainstram brand)
2. You can change provider after confirming your phone will work with them way longer than with PM

HI @Lizzy-poo

People might missed this.  But does the check show your phone not compatible with 5G network or not compatible with VoLTE?

it if shows not compatible with 5G but compatible with VoLTE, then you are perfectly fine and do not need to change phone.  You can still use 4G or LTE network here

but if the check shows you phone not compatible with VoLTE, the you need a new phone or you will not get any voice calls at all.

After March 1/27, you can only get data to use you apps. You won’t be able to make or receive calls.

You need to look for a new Canadian issued phone. Newer iPhone, Samsung, Google or Moto phone are compatible.

Hello @Lizzy-poo

Which phone are you currently using? Also, just know, the longer you use a phone that's not on PM's whitelist, you pay $5 extra a month up until 3G is cut off. That extra money being paid to use a soon to be closed service, could be used to purchase an upgraded phone. Food for thought.

@Lizzy-poo

What phone is that?

Since the IMEI checker confirms the phone is not compatible with PM's VoLTE, then your phone had been using 3G for voice and is now impacted by the 3G Network Shutdown that has began in Manitoba and will be fully phased out by March 2027
https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/get-help/articles/3g-shutdown

If you’re using a 3G-only device, your phone will stop working after these dates:
Manitoba (Rural): January 12, 2026
Manitoba (Urban : Winnipeg & Brandon): Starting March 31, 2026
National: Starting March 1, 2027

If the lack of VoLTE support is what affecting your voice calls, there is really nothing much you can do other than getting a phone that is compatible with PM's VoLTE network.   Hare are couple choices that will work:

  • iPhone 8 or later
  • Google Pixel 4 or later
  • Samsung S22 or later
  • Samsung Flip 2/Fold 2 or later
  • Samsung A15/A35/A55 or later

But generally most major brands of phones released after 2024 and are designed and sold for the Canadian market should work.  ( BUT Imported phones/grey market phones sold on marketplaces likely won't work)
