If you follow the steps above and respond yes to the text etc and do the reboot. Once you or in the new sim you check your setting as well and go to your about phone tab and it will have your current phone # there (at least for android)

You can port your number in from through your self serve account. Go to the Change Number feature on your overview page. Choose to port (transfer) your phone number and check the authorization box and enter required information.
Keep your Old SIM card in your phone and reply YES to the PAT (porting authorization text) within 90 minutes of receiving it. You can then place the PM SIM back in your phone and your port will complete within a few minutes to a maximum of 2 hours. Once incoming calls work on your PM SIM and your Old SIM ceases functioning your Old account (should) will be closed and your port completed. Just in case, before initiation port, remove all billing data from your Old account to avoid accidental charges by Old provider.

@kmcgrath10 - also recommended to restart your phone with the Public Mobile SIM card inside.
Performing a Reset of the Network Settings is not a bad idea to do either when changing SIM cards in a phone.
If this was a Bell cell number, the port should complete within 2-3 hours.
If this was a Bell landline, it could take up to 7 days, usually 3+ to complete the port.
If you go past these times and you are not receiving all your services yet (or incoming calls are still going to the Bell voicemail) contact CSA to check on the port.
Two ways to contact CSA found here: https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/ns/get-help/articles/contact-an-agent

You needed to leave the old SIM in a phone to answer yes to the text.
After that, the way to know is when an incoming call rings through.
