App issues on WiFi

Hi PM community!

This is not an issue with Public Mobile specifically, but its a frustrating one and I'm hoping maybe someone has dealt with it before and has an answer.

I have a Samsung A5 phone (unlocked) running AndroidOS 6.0 (Marshmallow). When I'm on my home WiFi, facebook, instagram and google play store all won't work (they don't load). I have heard it might be a router issue and while my new and old router both cause the issue, it does work when connected to some other WiFi networks.

The only way to use these apps when at home is to turn off WiFi which is killing my data plan. I have tried a couple of solutions found on google (reinstalling, changing router setting to IPv6) but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Tali

Hi, not sure if this will help... I had a similar problem on my Huawei Ascend XT.

It had something to do with the verison of Google play.

I reset the phone, let Google Play update everything that it needed to, and then loaded my own apps. This worked.

Good luck!

P.S. - hope this is not holding you back from catching Pokemon :P.

Does this problem only occur on your phone? Does it work on anyone else's phone? What about any wired devices to your router? If it is just your phone, I don't think it is your router but rather how your phone is handling some protocols. Does the fb, instagram, playstore site work in your phone's browser?

Hi @Tsal
I am still thinking about this issue. If I figure out something I will let you know.
In the meantime you can
1.go to settings
2. Go to application
3. Tap on Google play
4. Clear cache and clear data
5. Sign out Google play
6.sign in again
And check this app on your home WiFi.

Because you mentioned only the 3 application is not working with your home WiFi router but they work fine with another WiFi router and also with mobile data. So we can use the step by step troubleshooting
1. Something is between your home WiFi and Google play.
2. We are considering only Google play because if we can troubleshoot one of this 3 app then hopefully we can also able to do the others.
3. Either your home router is restricting data for google play or the play app is somehow configure to not get data from your home WiFi.
Maybe thinking this way we'll be able to find the root cause of this problem.

@Tsal,

Have you tried deleting the cache/data for these apps. Then uninstall these apps and re-install?

In Android, you can go to Settings > General > Apps and scroll to the app and then clear data/cache.

Just these apps, the internet and other apps all work fine. Part of what makes it so frustrating

As the other knowledgeable community members are suggesting do a factory reset of your router and try to reconnect your phone to home WiFi router by forgetting your password so that you can connect again by manually putting your WiFi password.
Are you there with us. Please let us know about this thing.

is it just these apps the dont work? or cant even browse.

As suggested I would do a factory reset on the router first and try again

Could be that your phone isn't getting an IP address from your wireless router even though it says it's connected? Have you tried going into your phone and forgetting your wireless network and try connecting again?

Hey @Tsal,

I would advise you to do a factory reset on your router.  Then proceed to setup just the password (WPA2-Personal) and not put any other restrictions on the router.  This should be sufficient.
